The family of President Faure Gnassingbé has ruled Togo for 50 years, but majority of Togolese still lack access to clean water.
The current president, Gnassingbe, who
has ruled for 12 years, took over power after succeeding his father,
Gnassingbe Eyadema, who ruled for nearly four decades.
Togolese human rights activist Farida
Nabourema says 60 percent of Togolese drink dirty stream water, despite
the presidency budgeting $700,000 for water annually.
She posted the following pictures on
Twitter with the caption: “When father and son rule your country for 50
years and turn your national wealth into their private fund, you have
60% of your people drinking this as water while the presidency budgets
700,000USD for its annual water spending. #Togodebout #Fauremustgo”
Thousands have been protesting almost
weekly in Togo since August last year. They are calling for President
GnassingbĂ©’s resignation.
