REC IMO - INEC REMAIN COMMITTED TO CONDUCT A FREE, FAIR AND CREDIBLE POLL IN 2019

The Resident Electoral Commissioner for Imo State, Prof Francis Chukwuemeka Ezeonu, has dissociated INEC from the purported pictures and videos now going viral showing some underaged engaging in electoral irregularity.

Prof Ezeonu explained that the said images may have originated from a local government /councillorship elections from one of the states of the federation organized by a State Independent Electoral Commission .

The Rec, who was reacting to concerns raised by citizens in his confidence engagement meeting with stakeholders in Ehime Mbano Local Government Area,stressed that INEC as a body was not saddled with the responsibility of conducting the local government elections but assured the electorate that the commission was rather committed to building sound democratic principles.

He said the State Independent Electoral Commissions though an electoral management body was a distinct body and operates as such. He appealed to them to have confidence in the commission in delivering a free, fair elections in Nigeria.

He stated that the chairman of the commission was desirous of conducting better elections in the country and assured that the 2019 elections would be better than the Anambra November 28 elections.

The electoral commissioner said he had been meeting with stakeholders in the electoral process and charged them to ensure that all adults who just turned 18years old and all those whose names were not on the register of voters should come out for registration reminding them of the penalties for multiple registration. 

The Electoral Officer for the Local Government, Mrs Theresa Akalaonu said that she had successfully concluded the deployment of the DDC machines to the Registration Areas and expressed delight that the it is yielding the desired results. 

The citizens had doubted the sincerity of the commission in producing an acceptable register of voters,ss well as conducting a credible 2019 election, demanded for the creation of additional polling units and Registration Areas since they were last created 20 years ago and warned against militarisation of the state during elections.
